Residents are being warned to expect delays around the Cutgate area of Edenfield Road today after a large void was discovered under the carridgeway and footpath.
In a statement issued earlier today a representative from Rochdale Council's Highways department said: "Today [Tuesday 28th November 2017] United Utilities have commenced emergency works to investigate a depression which has been forming on Edenfield Road in the Cutgate Area."
"Upon excavating the highway United Utilities have discovered a large void which has formed under the carriageway and footpath. As a result of this discovery temporary traffic signals have been erected to control traffic while the cause of the void is established and the subsequent repairs are undertaken."
"We have requested that these signals are manually operated in the peak period to minimise the disruption to users of the highway however despite this these works will cause a significant disruption to traffic. We will monitor this site on a daily basis to ensure United Utilities are manually controlling the signals."
"It is hoped this works will be completed by the 6th December however at present the cause and extent of the issue is not fully known so the duration of the works may reduce or increase."
